Lilly: She is a defiant lady bug with a red shell and black spots. The young Lilly is determined to explore the great river valley. On her first adventure she learns a simple message about giving and taking help, working together, and how we each have our own different colors, stripes, or spots!
Skipper: Our adventurous grasshopper with his long bouncy legs takes Lilly beyond the safety of the rivers edge. He will jump to the rescue as the awful blowing winds pulls at Lilly’s wings.
Snake: The yellow striped slithering snake is hiding behind his rock. With the cover of tall grass, he waits for Lilly and Skipper. Once in the grasp of his coils; “Mm, a bouncy grasshopper with a tasty little ladybug for my lunchtime snacks.”
Matilda: A great white crested owl perched high above the great river valley. She watches and waits to swoop down and rescue those in need of help.
Matilda is a source of great experience and wisdom. She teaches our young readers about the great valley.
Thaddeus: Is a majestic white butterfly with yellow and brown stripes. He is a master of the wind with his large white wings. On his first day as a butterfly, he is looking for the long valley where all different colors of butterflies live.
Archie: Team leader of the working ants. He is a voice of reason and just a bit on the grumpy side. He has plenty of work to do and very little time for all that chattering!
Ms. Bee and the buzzing Bees: Ms Bee and family are buzzing all around the valley. She is busy and certainly not a taxi service. In the end, Ms. Bee and the buzzing bees create an umbrella.
Our unspoken characters:Lilly’s mom, gentle and reassuring. She is not named but speaks volumes. There to embrace Lilly on the beginnings and ending of her day’s journey. And finally, we cannot forget about the awful blowing wind. The reader will quickly discover the wind has its own personality. Just when things calm down, the awful blowing wind reaches in to grab hold of Lilly’s tiny wings!
